From cut-outs and feathers to beautiful, bold colours, the holiday season is a great time to channel your unique personality and create a space that brings you joy.

This is indeed a season to be jolly! Post Covid, with months of family togetherness and at-home food, many of us have become more ambitious and explorative with what we make in our kitchens and how we uplift our homes. We’ve also learnt to ditch traditional trends and surround ourselves with all the twinkle and sparkle that comes with our own personal tastes.

So, whether you’re vibrant, whimsical or the queen of nostalgia, this year’s holiday palettes are guaranteed to brighten your home. Brian Futter, in-house stylist and buyer at Vegmo Accessories that has recently launched The Christmas Store, shares a few trendy ideas…

“It really is the most wonderful time of the year, especially now that we are living life a little more normally, and are able to open our homes to those nearest and dearest to celebrate our freedom, our health and everything fabulous that comes with the holiday season.”

When it comes to festive decorating, Brian and his team begin the search for Christmas goodies in April each year, sourcing locally and internationally to bring in a wide range of goodies – from trees and baubles to nativity scenes and snow globes – to suit the tastes and needs of every Christmas lover.

“If you’re DIYing at home, the holiday season is the perfect opportunity to rope in anyone with a creative flair who’s willing to lend a hand. With so many different colour themes and décor options available, making Christmas uniquely yours is what it really is about.”

In spite of all kinds of new, yearly trends, the traditional Christmas look remains popular with its bright reds and greens that ooze the joyful feeling this season evokes, and with Santa Claus soon coming to town, there is no reason why you shouldn’t get even more enthusiastic and bring a figurine or two into your home. There are loads of different sizes available on the market, so that you can have your pick when it comes to your very own indoor Father Christmas.

“You can jazz up your festive scene by including all kinds of traditional ornaments as well as some fun and playful items like bright red trucks, cuddly gnomes, adorable reindeer and so much more.”

While red and green hues certainly set the stage for a merry celebration, you can still have a gorgeous display without being completely colour-coordinated. In fact there are so many wonderful ways to make your Christmas tree come to life this holiday season – and create a look your whole family will love.

“Christmas trees come in all colours and sizes now days, and there is no reason why you can’t have more than one. If you have the space, why not create more than one festive space in your home and bring in elements that either work with the room or the theme you have chosen.”

You can bring a playful touch to your home with a smaller, child-friendly Christmas tree covered in playful ideas.

“Decorating the Christmas tree is a family affair, so why not let the kids take charge? Let them make their own decorations and ornaments which can be showcased proudly on their tree. Textured and touchable, appealing and approachable, safe for curious hands – there are loads of fun ideas on Pinterest.”

For a more glam look that will create a talking point among visiting family and friends, there are endless options when it comes to things you can use – feathers or boas, twigs and stems can be added for volume; hydrangeas and roses and other flower options galore. You can’t go wrong with butterflies and baubles that come in a rainbow of colours and textures like shiny, matt, glittery, glass, frosted, beaded, sequined, fabric or plain, so you can make your tree your own masterpiece.

“If you love traditional with a hint of a white Christmas (since we don’t have those here) a snow-flocked tree never fails to bring a little winter wonderland into your celebratory season.”

A few other trendy ideas you can try include Citrus and Tin – painted pinecones and dried orange slices that pair perfectly with the rustic charm of galvanized tin bells and stars; Copper and Cones  – pinecones and burlap bows mixes with metallic ornaments; Calm and White – white trees nestled in a round box make an eye-catching foundation for pastel baubles and metallic snowflakes; Navy and Gold – a snow tipped tree with baubles in shades of gold and navy with gold feathers or giant bows and navy pointsettias make for an extravagant statement in a glorious space; Hay Bales – if you’re living up the hill on a horse farm, why not design a tree to suit your environment using stacked hay bales a star topper and simple fairy lights. It’ll be incredibly original!

“One of the most memorable parts to any Christmas is the meal, whether you do a brunch, lunch or dinner, your table should be as fabulous as your décor.  Co-ordinate your table with under plates, crockery, glassware and cutlery then add elements which will make it truly special.  Wreaths for centrepieces, mini ceramic trees, baubles aren’t only for the tree. If they’re beautifully placed or decorated, they make a statement on your table too.”
