The Oceans 8 Charity Swim returns to Vetch’s Beach, Durban Undersea Club, bringing together passionate swimmers, ocean lovers, and change-makers for a challenge that goes beyond the waves. Founded by charities for charities, this feel-good, warm-water swim is more than just a race – it’s a movement committed to creating a sustainable flow of funding for 14 deserving non-profits across KwaZulu-Natal. The event is made up of one, four, eight and 16-mile swims, that support charities including the Duzi-Umngeni Conservation Trust, National Sea Rescue Institute, Project Rhino, Singakwenza, CROW, Game Rangers’ Association of South Africa, IPSS Search and Rescue, Makabongwe Pre-School, Made for More, Nazareth House in Berea, Umduduzi – Hospice Care for Children, Pietermaritzburg Children’s Home, Rise Against Hunger Africa and Sport for Lives. The 2025 SPAR Women’s 10/5km Challenge marks its 35th edition in Durban this year. Since its inception in 1990, the race has welcomed more than 369 000 participants, growing from just 2 200 in its first year. This year’s capped field of 12,000 will start at on Sunday June 22 at 8am (10km) and 8.45am (5km), following the familiar fast, flat route from Masabala Yengwa Avenue to the Kings Park outer fields. The event features entertainment, prizes, and a Hyundai Exter giveaway. This year’s theme, #Twenty20Thrive, emphasizes wellness and empowerment. R5 from each entry supports the Sinethemba Women’s Foundation that advocates for an end to gender-based violence. Online entries (R180) close June 16 or when full. This month, Durban plays host to one of its most exciting and meaningful festivals yet – the BUMP 2K25 Beerpong and Music Festival – featuring 12 hours of high-energy fun for a powerful community cause. The day launches with a 32-team beerpong tournament, where competitors go head-to-head in a lively knockout until one team claims the trophy. The focus then shifts to the stage, where music lovers can look forward to headliners Veranda Panda followed by a blend of mashups and remixes by Fatpora, Dezz Bass, Paul Marks, DJ Spike and Local Bru. Supported by WOB, Wrapfinity, SQC, Cdcstudios, and more, the event takes place on Saturday, June 28 at the Westville Old Boys Sports Grounds from 12pm to midnight. Tickets are priced from R100 and all profits will go toward Rescue & Support Services, the non-profit division of Mobi-Claw911 that plays a critical role in public safety, particularly in times of large-scale disaster.
