A buzz of fresh air

In celebration of World Honeybee Day this month, we’re taking a moment to acknowledge not just the humble bee, but also a ground-breaking wellness initiative right here on our doorstep.

Nestled in the heart of Assagay, Macnut Farm – a venue already known for its charm, exclusivity and serene riverbank setting – has taken a beautiful step further in its commitment to wellness, nature and community. In collaboration with Bushveld Bees, they’ve launched South Africa’s very first apaiary air therapy room, and we had the privilege of being one of the first to experience it.

What is apiary air therapy?

Not to be confused with bee sting or venom therapy, apiary air therapy (Bee Bed Therapy) is entirely non-invasive. It involves reclining on a specially designed wooden and iron-frame bed that sits directly above several active beehives. You’re separated by the floor of the therapy chamber, yet still immersed (through a controlled air system) in the hive’s microclimate – breathing in the hive air – rich in volatile compounds like propolis, nectar, wax particles, essential oils and enzymes, while occasionally sensing the soft hum or faint vibrations of bees (who remain entirely undisturbed) beneath you.

The space and the sensory experience

Macnut’s Apiary Air Therapy room currently houses five hives, including a coffee table observation hive built into the structure, offering a safe and fascinating view of bee activity during each session. The room is intimate and peaceful, designed for one person at a time, with an upgraded mattress that enhances ventilation and comfort.

Surrounded by rustling trees, Christmas beetles, and the gentle flow of a nearby river, the setting is an immersion in nature itself. The dominant sound is the rhythmic hum of bees – a calming, almost hypnotic vibration that lulls you into a meditative state. The scent is a distinctive, healing blend of honey, wax and propolis … sweet, earthy and utterly natural.

The air inside the room is rich in negative ions, known to support respiratory health, improve mood and purify the lungs.

Who is it for?

This therapy is suitable for all ages, including children and even babies. It may be especially helpful for those dealing with

  • Asthma and bronchitis
  • Sleep disorders
  • Anxiety, stress or depression
  • Nervous system imbalances
  • Respiratory tract infections

That said, you don’t need a medical diagnosis to benefit. The experience alone – unplugging from the modern world and reconnecting with nature – is often its own kind of medicine.

What makes Macnut Farm’s Apiary Air Therapy room truly unique is the attention to detail. The space isn’t just functional – it’s a sanctuary, a rare opportunity to breathe deeply, reconnect with nature and feel the ancient healing power of the bees. Every element, from the wood and iron bed frame to the handcrafted finishes, reflects respect for both the bees and the land.

Safety is a top priority. While the bees are entirely contained in their hives, Hannah Paine who runs the therapy facility, is always nearby with a medical kit just in case – though stings are extremely rare.

Macnut has already seen tremendous results from clients … reduced anxiety, improved breathing, better sleep and a greater sense of balance. The therapy room forms part of a broader movement in South Africa, which recently included an Apitherapy Symposium hosted at the farm, led by Dr Stefan Stangaciu, president of the International Federation of Apitherapy. His visit marked a growing national interest in apitherapy – a field encompassing all medicinal uses of bee products.

How it works

Apiary Air Therapy combines three natural healing modalities:

Aromatherapy The inhalation of hive air infused with therapeutic bee compounds like propolis and nectar.

Vibrations Gentle vibrations from the bees’ wings beneath the bed act as a subtle

micro-massage to the nervous system.

Ionised air The beehive atmosphere is rich in negatively charged ions, which may aid in respiratory cleansing and mental clarity.

Options and extras

Sessions are available in 30-minute or one-hour blocks, and retreat packages at the farm include access to the therapy room. For those wanting to extend the wellness experience, accommodation is available on-site. Macnut Farm also offers a curated range of bee-based products, including raw honey, mead, wax wraps and propolis balms, so you can take a little hive magic home with you.
