Women play an important role in maintaining the health and well-being of their families.  It is also important for them to make their own health a priority.

Below are some diseases that women are prone to as well as the symptoms to look out for:

Breast Cancer:  Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer among women.  The risk factors for breast cancer can be genetic but some lifestyle.  Some breast lumps are not cancerous, but it is important for women to go consult with a doctor as soon as they notice a lump in their breasts.  Symptoms of breast cancer include swelling of the breast, nipple discharge, nipple pain, redness, scaliness or thickening of the breast skin or nipple and a lump in the underarm area.

Bladder Infections:  Bladder infections affect men as well, but they are most common in women.  A bladder infection is caused by a bacterial infection within the bladder.  Bladder infections refer to an infection anywhere in the urinary tract such as the bladder, kidneys or urethra.  The symptoms of a bladder infection vary depending on severity.  They can include pain or burning when urinating, a frequent need to urinate, cramping or pressure in the lower abdomen and foul-smelling urine.

Cervical Cancer:  Cervical cancer affects the cervix (the narrow part of the lower uterus and can lead to infertility.  A person may experience no symptoms at all in the early stages of cervical cancer.  A pap smear test is preventative as it aims to reveal any cell changes that indicate the possible development of cancer.  The most common symptoms of cervical cancer include pelvic pain, bleeding after sexual intercourse and bleeding between periods.

Ovarian Cancer:  Ovarian cancer may not cause any specific symptoms, especially in its early stages.  When it does cause symptoms, they can include abdominal swelling or enlargement, changes in bladder or bowel habits, abdominal fullness and abdominal pain.

“Women play a critical role in maintaining the health and well-being of their homes which is why it is important for them to put their health first,” says Gert Coetzee, Pharmacist and Diet pioneer who founded The Diet Everyone Talks About.

Below he lists some hints and tips that can help women maintain their health:

Have a healthy diet:  Make sure that you have a diet that is rich in fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean protein such as fish, legumes and beans.  You should also cut down on saturated fat, sugar, salt and processed foods.

Make some time for exercising:  The more active you are, the better.  Being physically active helps build muscle and bone strength, boosts your heart health and also helps you lose weight.  Exercising can also be an energy booster and reduce the risks of chronic diseases.

Visit your doctor regularly:  Regular medical check-ups are crucial for the benefit of general well-being and overall health.  They help detect any possible health issues that need to be treated.   This helps in diagnosing diseases at an early stage when they can still be treated.

Have some ‘me’ time:  A woman’s health is her total well-being and can be affected by factors such as stress, workload, nutrition and family responsibilities.  As a woman, it is important to time each day to do something for yourself.  Finding time to relax is very important for your health and well-being as it helps keep your stress levels down.

Avoid risky habits:  Stay away from alcohol and cigarettes.  These are bad habits that can put your health at risk.  Smoking damages your heart and blood circulation which increases your risks of diseases such as coronary disease, heart attack and stroke.
