Great skin is possible, even in your teenage years

It’s almost impossible to get through your teen years without a few personal complaints about your skin, but not to worry, you’re not alone.

Many teenagers struggle with acne due to their changing hormones which lead to the enlargement of oil glands, making teens skin oily, creating blackheads, acne and other complications.

We asked the owners SkinPhD Queenswood, Carla and Mariette, for a few skin care tips to help teens achieve the best possible results for their skin.

Properly wash your face.
It’s important to remove excess oil, dirt, and sweat, daily. With an array of great products on the market, you can easily find ones suitable for your skin type. It’s incredibly important to find a skincare product that agrees with your skin and isn’t too harsh. Ask your mom to help you find a suitable product or visit your closest SkinPhd for a consult. Get into the habit of making it a part of your morning/evening regime.

Don’t pick your face.
If you pick, squeeze, scratch or pinch blemishes, you risk developing acne scars. Don’t rub or touch blemishes. Let them heal naturally. Blemishes can be a little embarrassing (we have all been there) but they’ll land up being more embarrassing if they’re red and swollen.

Know your skin type.
The truth is that absolutely anyone can get acne – children, adults, even your grandma! Knowing your skin type will help you choose the right skincare products. For example, if your skin is oily, choose noncomedogenic products that are formulated to not block pores.

Increase your water intake.
Staying hydrated is important as your body may send a signal to your skin’s oil glands to produce more oil if it is feeling dehydrated which furthermore leads to breakouts. Dehydration also gives your skin a dull appearance and promotes inflammation and redness. Pack an extra water bottle for school, perhaps even freeze it at night so it stays cool during the day.

Keep your diet in check.
You are what you eat and food directly affects your skins health and breakouts. Avoid greasy, oily foods! Try to stay clear of too many takeaways. Ensure you pack healthy snacks for school.

Reapply moisturiser and sunblock regularly and don’t touch your face. Your hands touch multiple items during the day and are in constant contact with grime and bacteria, especially during Summer when temperatures rise. Each time you touch your face, some of those pore-clogging impurities may get transferred to your skin and cause pimples. Carry around an extra bottle of moisturiser in your school bag for when your skin feels a little dry or for those outdoor sports lessons when you need to reapply sunblock.

What product/treatment do you recommend for breakouts?
We suggest a ‘Skin Perfect Deep Cleanse’. This facial in particular helps treat impure skin. It includes steam, extractions and our new bio-technology brightening mask to soothe the skin.

How often should one have this treatment?
At least once a month! Make it a part of your monthly skincare routine. Healthy skin requires commitment and dedication.

It’s important to remember that everyone’s skin is different and although you and your friends may be going through puberty together, the effects on your skin can be completely different.
