Love yourself

Fresh starts are calling, and motivational speaker Candice Singh Engelbrecht wants you to answer. She’s here to remind us that being a WOW-man isn’t about perfection … it’s about purpose.

As we step into a new year, Candice Singh Engelbrecht shares her secrets to healing, confidence, and … in the spirit of Valentine’s month … unapologetic self-love. And for her, it doesn’t always mean looking like your best self. Sometimes, it’s messy buns, oversized hoodies, zero makeup, and no plans. ‘And that’s perfectly fine,’ she says with a laugh.

What does matter though, is healing, healing, healing! And it’s the single most important lesson life has taught her.

‘No matter how deep the wounds, or who might have caused them, we all have the strength to rebuild and become stronger. True healing happens when we rise above our challenges, learn from our struggles, and build confidence, resilience, and authenticity. That’s when we reclaim our power.’

Candice knows this journey all too well. That’s why she founded Be the Voice GBV Foundation. An organisation focused on education, awareness, and lasting change to combat Gender-Based Violence. The foundation’s slogan, Breaking Chains, Building Voices says it all.

Growing up in a community where GBV was normalised, Candice felt compelled to challenge the status quo. What began as a simple social media awareness campaign soon blossomed into a full-fledged foundation making a tangible difference.

Like many of us, her most transformative era came during the pandemic. ‘Covid made me stop and reflect. I realised life is too short to stay stuck in fear. I had to work on myself, process past traumas, and start walking boldly in my purpose. And that’s when I knew I wanted the same (and so much more) for others, too.’

Her biggest takeaway was that self-love and healing aren’t linear. ‘Challenges can feel overwhelming, and I’ve definitely had my moments of defeat. But I’ve learned to focus on prayer, solutions, and tapping into my inner strength. Processing emotions fully, taking small steps, and surrounding myself with supportive people have been my go-to strategies.’

And that’s exactly what she hopes to teach others. Candice’s ultimate message for women is simple … no one is perfect. And that’s okay.

‘It’s time to embrace the confident, unapologetic version of yourself. Your journey is yours, and there’s so much power in owning your story. Now is the time. This is your cue!’

At home, she swaps the stage for comfy pyjamas, a good book, and coffee. She loves spending time with her husband, Trevor and children, Shelby and Enzo. Movie nights,
road trips, hikes and creamy garlic pasta (her signature dish!) are what defines the Engelbrechts. But Candice is also an advocate for solitude, as she always keeps a few moments for herself, just to breathe and recharge … because balance, right?

For now, Candice is focused on expanding her foundation and podcast, planning more speaking engagements, and launching mentorship programs to help young women step into their purpose.

And while she believes in moderation for most things, she says there’s one exception … self-love. ‘You can never have too much of that!

‘Remember … always be kind. You never know what someone else is going through, and a little kindness can go a long way.’

This year, why not take a page from Candice’s book? Show yourself some love. Lean into your healing. And step boldly into your purpose. Because you, too, can be a WOW-man.

How can women show love to themselves this V-day?
Firstly, by reading a book, taking a walk, or just having a quiet moment to yourself. Secondly, taking a break from your busy schedule and just breathe. (Rest is self-care too). Lastly, (and everyone will agree with me) having an at-home spa day. Pamper yourself with a relaxing bath, your favourite skincare treatments, and soothing music.

What superpower do women have that men don’t?
Women have the incredible superpower of multitasking with grace and balancing multiple roles. Above all, women have the power to create life, not just in the physical sense, but in how women nurture dreams, relationships, and communities.

Your recipe for a successful year?
Start the year with a clear intention. Know what you want and why you want it. Embrace your uniqueness. Don’t conform to what others think you should be or do. Don’t be afraid to fail. Every failure is a lesson and a step toward greatness.

What does your social media algorithm think you’re obsessed with?
Motivational content, BMW cars and of course, fashion.

What does your ultimate self-care day look like?
It’s all about pampering and relaxation. It starts with washing and blowing out my hair, followed by my favourite skincare routine and doing my nails. Watching Netflix and, treating myself by ordering in food. It’s my perfect way to recharge.

Something that will always make your day?
Besides coffee and chocolate, it’s doing charity work. Whether it’s volunteering, speaking at events, or mentoring young women. Giving back and making a positive impact fills my heart and reminds me why I do what I do.

What is your secret, less-healthy indulgence?
Hands down, chocolate. I can’t resist a good chocolate. Especially after a long day. It’s my little reward and comfort.
