Cars, kids & heat

It may be the start of autumn, but if you live on the North Coast you know that the heat and humidity are far from gone and children should never be left in vehicles unatttended.

Every year we hear about parents forgetting their children in the car, sometimes with tragic consequences. This can happen to a parent for several reasons (a change in routine, sleep deprivation, time pressures and stress), so the team from MotorHappy are offering some tips to help parents avoid making this possibly devastating error.

  1. Put something you need in the back seat (cell phone, handbag, employee ID or even one of your shoes!);
  2. Set a reminder on your cell phone;
  3. Keep a stuffed animal in your child’s car seat. When the child is in the car seat, place the stuffed animal in the front seat to remind you that your child is in the back;
  4. Make it a habit to look into the back seat before you lock your car, even when your child is not there;
  5. Ask your child’s day care or child minder to always let you know if your child does not arrive when expected;
  6. If your child is old enough, teach them how to work the hooter so they can call for help if they’re accidently locked in the car.
