Professor Deseré Kokt believes education has the power to transform lives. Through research, mentorship and a passion for understanding people, she is helping shape ethical leaders ready for the future world of work.
“The future of work begins with understanding people.” It is a belief that has shaped Deseré’s career and continues to inspire her work in education, research and leadership.
As a professor in human resource management at the Central University of Technology, Free State, Deseré has dedicated her career to understanding human behaviour in the workplace. Her curiosity extends to artificial intelligence and its impact on the future of work. She recently co-authored a book exploring AI in the new world of work.
Her days are spent lecturing, mentoring postgraduate students, conducting research and collaborating with industry. As a National Research Foundation-rated researcher, she also secures funding for research projects and student development, believing education and innovation are vital to South Africa’s global competitiveness.
A defining moment came in 2020 when she was promoted to full professor in human resource management. More important than the title, however, is inspiring students to become responsible citizens and ethical leaders. “I am an advocate for continuous learning, growth and development.”
For Deseré, success is measured not by accolades but by the people she influences. She believes education is about developing critical thinking, communication skills and self-awareness in a world that constantly demands more.
She is passionate about preparing students for the workplace through industry partnerships and initiatives such as CUT’s annual HR Summit, while mentoring young academics and researchers.
Her advice to young women is to develop both technical expertise and interpersonal skills. “Building a successful career takes grit and determination.”
