Montego Pet Nutrition partnered with Sweet Paws Rescue and Care to support animal welfare in the Helderberg community.
In many communities, a bowl of food can mean far more than a meal. It can be the start of trust, the relief of knowing a beloved dog will not go hungry, and a small but powerful reminder that someone cares. This spirit came to life when Montego Pet Nutrition shared pet food and treats with Sweet Paws and three deserving community members as part of its Bursting with Character campaign.
For 26 years, Montego’s support has been rooted in the belief that animal welfare is closely connected to community welfare. Through its donations, including the nearly 300kg of pet food and treats for Sweet Paws, the brand cares for vulnerable pets while supporting the people and organisations working on the ground.
While Montego provides the nourishment and treats that help make these moments possible, Sweet Paws helps ensure that the support reaches the animals and families who need it most. Working closely with townships and disadvantaged communities, the organisation’s approach is built on trust, education and consistent support. The team often finds dogs living on chains, sleeping on bare ground or suffering from untreated wounds, hunger and preventable disease, while also meeting families who love their animals deeply but need guidance and practical help.
“We don’t drive in, hand out food and leave,” says Anita Labuschagne, founder of Sweet Paws. “We build relationships, earn trust and keep going back.”
That approach makes Montego’s support meaningful. For Sweet Paws, food is more than a donation; it opens conversations about sterilisation, vaccinations, shelter and lifelong care. A bag of food can become a bridge to trust, and trust becomes the beginning of change.
That spirit comes through in three interviews conducted with community members in Helderberg: Colby, a young boy caring for dogs with remarkable dedication; Muriel, whose home has become a place of comfort for neighbourhood dogs; and Caliban, who feeds and protects animals beyond his own yard.
Colby: A Young Boy with a Big Heart
At just 13, Colby has become a caretaker to dogs he rescued from the street or removed from neglectful situations.
“My dogs are everything to me,” Colby says. “They protect me, they rely on me to look after them and they are my best friends, no matter how bad our situation might be.”
For Colby, Montego’s support means reassurance. His dogs can eat, stay healthy and continue being the companions that make him smile each morning. “This delivery is very special,” he says. “Thank you for this, Montego.”
Aunty Muriel: Love That Keeps a Street Together
In Broadlands, Muriel has become a quiet source of care. Recently widowed, she looks after seven dogs, some of whom simply come to her home for food, treats and affection. To Muriel, they are company, comfort and protection.
“The dogs give me a reason to want to live longer,” she says. “They like me and appreciate me.”
She feeds them morning and evening. She also speaks up for them when others complain and educates children on how to care for animals.
Caliban: The Community Dog Gentleman
Caliban is known as a respected man and devoted dog lover. With 12 sterilised dogs of his own, he feeds between 21 and 25 dogs each week. Some belong to neighbours who cannot care for them properly, so Caliban steps in where he can.
He describes the joy of walking out with food and hearing the dogs greet him. His own dogs sleep inside, live as part of the family and have carried him through difficult moments.
“If my dogs could remember me for one thing, it would be that I am their friend,” he says.
For Caliban, the biggest ongoing challenge is food and shelter. Montego’s support has helped him feed not only his own animals, but also the neighbourhood dogs who know his home is a place of safety and care.

Through its ongoing relationship with Sweet Paws and the stories of Colby, Muriel and Caliban, Montego’s support becomes a reminder that every dog has a story, every community has people who care, and every act of kindness can help create lasting change.
Animal welfare is emotional, difficult and deeply human. Some days bring heartbreak, but others bring hope: a child proudly caring for his pets, a widow finding comfort in the animals around her, or a community member becoming a trusted voice for better pet care.
