A table for two …

A beautifully set table, where love, memory and connection come together, reminds us that the most meaningful moments are always shared.

There are moments in life that deserve to be celebrated not just with words, but with something far more tangible, something shared, something savoured. Food has always been that quiet, powerful connector, a bridge between generations, the centrepiece of our most meaningful gatherings, and often the language through which we express love when words fall short.

In this issue, we celebrate two of life’s most beautiful milestones – Mother’s Day and the journey to ‘I do’. At first glance, they may seem like separate stories. One honours the woman who raised us, nurtured us and shaped our earliest understanding of love. The other marks the beginning of a new chapter – where love is chosen and a new family is formed. Yet both are rooted in the same truth – connection.

There is something deeply special about a table set with intention. A table where a mother and daughter sit side by side, perhaps reminiscing, perhaps laughing, perhaps quietly taking in the weight of the moment. A table where a bride gathers with the women who have walked beside her, celebrating not only the wedding ahead, but the journey that brought her there.

These are the moments that linger. Food becomes more than nourishment, it becomes memory. The first bite of a childhood favourite.

The familiar aroma that signals home. The delicate sweetness of a dessert shared over conversation. These are the details that quietly stitch together our most treasured experiences.

For brides, food can offer a moment of pause amidst the whirlwind, a chance to slow down, to savour, to be present. For mothers, it is often an act of love, passed down through recipes, traditions and gestures that speak volumes. For both, it is a way of saying, you are loved, you are celebrated, you are seen.

So this month, we invite you to gather around the table. To celebrate the women who raised us, and the women we are becoming. To host, to share, to indulge and to create moments that will be remembered long after the last plate is cleared.

Because in the end, it’s never just about the food. It’s about who is sitting beside you. To inspire your own moment of gathering, here are two simple recipes to help you create a beautiful and meaningful table.

Rose & Berry Pavlova

A light, elegant dessert that feels as beautiful as it tastes, perfect for celebrating love, mothers, and new beginnings.

You will need:
Meringue: 4 large egg whites at room temperature; 1 cup caster sugar; 1 teaspoon white vinegar; 1 teaspoon cornflour; 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Topping: 1 cup fresh cream, whipped; 1 to 2 tablespoons icing sugar; 1 teaspoon rose water, optional; fresh berries such as strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries; edible flowers, optional, for garnish; fresh mint leaves, optional

To make:
Preheat the oven to 120°C and line a baking tray with baking paper. Beat the egg whites until soft peaks form, then gradually add the caster sugar, one spoon at a time, beating until the mixture is glossy and stiff peaks form. Gently fold in the vinegar, cornflour, and vanilla extract, taking care not to knock out the air.
Spoon the mixture onto the prepared tray and shape it into a round, creating a slight well in the centre. Bake for one hour, then switch off the oven and allow the pavlova to cool completely inside the oven.

Once cooled, top with whipped cream, lightly sweetened and infused with rose water if desired, then decorate with fresh berries, edible flowers, and mint leaves.

To serve:
Serve immediately for the perfect contrast of crisp meringue and soft, creamy topping.

Herbed Goat’s Cheese & Seasonal Green Salad

A fresh, light dish that balances elegance and simplicity, ideal for a bridal brunch or Mother’s Day table.

You will need:
Salad: 4 cups mixed leafy greens such as rocket, baby spinach, and lettuce; 1 cup cucumber, sliced; 1 cup green beans, blanched; ½ cup peas, fresh or frozen and lightly blanched; ½ cup radishes, thinly sliced; 100g goat’s cheese, crumbled; a handful of toasted nuts such as almonds or walnuts

Dressing: 3 tablespoons olive oil; 1 tablespoon lemon juice; 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard; 1 teaspoon honey; salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste; fresh herbs such as parsley, dill, or basil, finely chopped

To make:
Prepare all the salad ingredients and arrange them on a large serving platter. Scatter over the goat’s cheese and toasted nuts.

In a small bowl, whisk together the olive oil, lemon juice, mustard, honey, salt, pepper, and fresh herbs until well combined, then drizzle over the salad just before serving.

To serve:
Present on a large platter and finish with a sprinkle of extra herbs or edible flowers for a beautifully styled, celebratory dish.
