Call them what you will – zits, pimples or breakouts – their appearance is devastating, confidence crushing and down right depressing. Acne is one of the most common skin concerns and affects at least 85 per cent of young adults.

Why is it so common? Acne can be related to diet, hormones, the environment and even genetics. However, before you pull on your balaclava to hide your blemished skin, there is great news…acne is treatable.

Local skincare brand, Fundamentals Skincare give us the lowdown on how to handle acne. Here’s what you do.

Firstly, identify the type of acne you have:

  1. Pimples (pustules): Pus-filled bumps.
  2. Papules: Small, red to purple, discoloured bumps.
  3. Blackheads: Plugged pores with a black top.
  4. Whiteheads: Plugged pores with a white top.
  5. Nodules: Large, painful lumps under your skin.
  6. Cystic: Large, red boils developing deep under the skin. They are pus-filled lesions that look similar to boils.

Secondly, learn what causes them and how to treat your acne type:

  • Pimples, papules, blackheads and whiteheads are common and can appear anywhere on the body. They can be caused by clogged pores, hormones, environmental triggers and diet. Treat them with the correct skincare products and consistent care.
  • Nodules and cystic acne is mostly hormonal and not caused by any skincare products or environmental factors. They may appear on your jawline and chin and can be painful. For effective treatment, seek professional help.

After treatment, there may be post-acne marks and pigmentation. This happens because your skin cells react to damage or irritation by making extra melanin and inflammation is the result. This skin condition shows up as tan, brown, dark brown, or even blue-gray patches and spots on your skin.

Opt for products with active ingredients suitable to your skin type to help fade away post-acne scars such as alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), beta hydroxy acids (BHA’s), retinoids, niacinamide, alpha arbutin and azelaic acid.

The number one rule is to keep your skin clean by washing your face twice daily with a gentle, non-abrasive cleanser.
