Big five country for kids …

Witnessing your kids experiencing and discovering the Big Five and all the other creatures in the bush for the first time is an incredible experience. And one offered by Thanda Safari – a Big Five game reserve situated on 14 000 hectares in the heart of Zululand – a really brilliant option for those with young children wanting a bush break.

There’s the Bucks & Bugs Club – where your children have the time of their lives (while you enjoy time out in the bush or relaxing at your lodge, camp or spa); a Junior Rangers Course, where they’ll spend time with one of the guides, learning the ways of the wild … think game tracking, game spotting, spoor identification as well as bird and plant life … and at the end of your stay they’ll be awarded a Junior Ranger Certificate from Thanda Safari (big win for show and tell!).

There’s  a special menu just for kids, and Thanda’s nannies are all wonderful mothers themselves, so while you’re on a game drive or taking time out, they will take care of your children.

You can choose from three different accommodation types – Thanda Safari Lodge, Villa iZulu (where children of all ages are welcome) and Thanda Tented Camp (children need to be six or older).  The first, Thanda Safari Lodge, has nine bush suites – shaped like a traditional Zulu homestead, they have panoramic views of the surrounding game reserve; with five suites for 10 guests, and situated amidst lush green lawns and surrounded by expanses of wild African bush, Villa iZulu is an outstanding safari hideaway for families, holidaymakers and wedding parties wanting privacy; and Thanda Tented Camp has 15 colonial safari-style tents, each with its own viewing deck and en-suite bathrooms.

Thanda Safari offers an authentic South African wildlife experience with excellent game viewing all year round, it has a sincere commitment to the Zulu culture and conservation of the environment; is actively involved in conservation and wildlife research, and works to uplift the local communities through ‘Star for Life’ and other projects. Meaning ‘love’ in isiZulu. It’s situated 23km north of Hluhluwe on the N2 (about 220km north of Durban) and is an easy drive from the N2 by gravel road (no 4×4 required). Richards Bay is the closest commercial airport, with King Shaka International Airport, Durban being the closest international airport.
