Our fast-paced world has intensified the yearning for nature’s embrace, propelling cyclists to seek extraordinary adventures around South Africa and the globe.
The Tanqua Kuru Bicycle Race, curated by founder Jeremy Crowder in 2021, invites riders to delve into the heart of the Tankwa Karoo for an unforgettable two-day gravel biking experience covering 170 kilometers. Crowder, inspired by the raw beauty of the Tankwa Karoo, crafted a race that goes beyond traditional biking events.
Unlike conventional races, Tanqua Kuru prioritises the rider’s experience and connection with nature. The route features surprising installations, offering riders respite and fun, including beach setups and pop-up energy stations with fresh goods. The race also offers two routes on day 1, a long 130km route or 55km. Day 2 is the same for all entries, a 55km ride through the park to complete the experience.
What sets Tanqua Kuru apart is its emphasis on the overall experience, not just performance. After a challenging day, riders retreat to comfortable tents equipped with proper beds, linen, duvets, lights, and even electric blankets. Showers with hot water and flushing toilets provide a touch of luxury. The race offers a pop-up restaurant, bar, and exploration of permanent art installations at The Tankwa Tented Camp.
Designed to test modern gravel bicycles, the race welcomes all bike enthusiasts. Expect a mix of seasoned mountain bikers and gravel bikers vying for victory from May 24 to May 26, 2024. Entries are open here. Follow them on Instagram and Facebook @the_tanqua_kuru_bicycle_race
