As excitement builds with the newly selected @mrs_south_africa 2025 Semi-Finalist, Tiana Marshman from Westville needs every vote that she can rally in, to make her cause count.

As a wife, mum and full-time employee, despite struggles with mental health issues such as depression and anxiety, she just managed to obtain her B.Science in Agricultural Business Science (hons).

She entered this pageant to gain all the necessary tools to make her voice heard as she creates awareness and inspires woman dealing with mental illness to rise above this disease and become the best versions of themselves.

As a young woman who has worked her way up from her first job as a call centre agent to her current senior position as an office manager, she has always put herself in the “backseat” and took the BOLD step this year to fully embrace woman empowerment.
In the run up to the pageant, the public is allowed to vote for their favourite semi-finalist, and we’re happy to cast our votes Tiana’s way. We hope you too will show your support for this lovely and inspiring local lady!

Poverty, unemployment and limited education remain rife in South Africa, with women and children bearing the brunt of this undeserved struggle. One woman, together with a dedicated team, is making a significant impact on the lives of women and children in KZN’s rural communities.

In 1999, Julika Falconer, a young single mother from Germany arrived in South Africa to do her Master’s in Maritime Law at the University of Cape Town. This could not have been further from her calling. Fast-forward to 2025, and Julika now serves as chief executive of Durban-based Zero2Five Trust which focuses on Early Childhood Development (ECD), and leads a small, but dedicated team of donors and volunteers who share a vision of a future where every child in South Africa under five will thrive. Based on extensive research, Julika says that ECD and nutrition go hand in hand.

“The first 1000 days are hugely important because 90 per cent of children’s brains develop during this period. Without proper nutrition, it could be too late for these children. When it comes to physical growth or cognitive development, they can never catch up.”

During the Covid pandemic, she says @zero2fivetrust never stopped working. Then came the KZN riots and the floods. A return to so-called normality brought them head-to-head with ever-increasing food insecurity as the economy floundered.

Studies show that doing acts of kindness can give kids a greater sense of belonging, improve their self-esteem, social skills, relationships and increase their happiness. A child development expert shares these tips to raise a kind kid:

SHOW WHAT KINDNESS IS
Instead of trying to explain what kindness is, show them. Point out acts of kindness you notice in books, on TV or even during playtime. Model kindness at home and when you’re out. Remember, you are their best teacher!

BE THEIR KINDNESS COACH
Set your child up for kindness success by creating very specific kindness opportunities. For example, ‘Your brother loves MEGA Bloks. I think he’d be really happy if you shared one with him. That would be really kind of you!’

POUR ON THE PRAISE
Reward even the smallest act of kindness with a big serving of praise. Besides reinforcing the behaviour, it will set an expectation that kindness is important to you. Also, your praise serves as a good example of being kind.

Say hello to our Indoor Plant of the Month … Gardenia!

Did you know that sweetly scented Gardenia can be grown indoors as well as on the patio? All it needs is to be near a window that receives bright, indirect sunlight. Keep the soil moist but not soggy and feed once a month with a fertiliser or liquid feed at half strength, for acid- loving plants. It doesn’t mind being trimmed after flowering to keep it in shape. Cut off dead flowers to encourage new ones. If you need to repot, do it when the weather is cooling down and the plant is semi-dormant.

When it’s scorching, there’s nothing nicer than sitting down and enjoying a light, fresh, alfresco lunch or dinner. Sean Granger, general manager of one of our fave getaways, Granny Mouse Country House & Spa, shared two of his favourite Summer-friendly, flavourful and healthy soup recipes with us:

SPICY WATERMELON GAZPACHO
A classic take on a gazpacho, with a twist of watermelon, jalapenos and danish feta to bring some heat and sweetness to this cold soup. For an adult spin, you can add in a tot or two of vodka before serving to give it an extra kick.

AVO AND CUCUMBER SOUP
For the avocado lovers, a light, fresh and hydrating soup with avocado, cucumber and lemon topped with a fresh load of cucumber, cherry tomatoes and red onions.

BUTTERBEAN HUMMUS AND MANGO SWIRL DIP PLATTER
It’s time to indulge in a tropical seasonal fave ... Mangoes. They are high in vitamins A and C, biotin and the mineral potassium. They are also a source of vitamins B1 and B6 and free from fat, sodium and cholesterol and are the perfect Summer treat.
